Printing and finishing effects are what make custom paper boxes and paper bags stand out. However, many packaging projects run into unexpected defects simply because the surface paper does not work well with the selected finishing process. Paper boxes and paper bags share popular decoration techniques, yet their paper properties require different handling.
Finishing Guide for Paper Boxes:
Paper Boxes are wrapped with face paper on greyboard. The paper surface tension, texture and absorbency decide decoration results.
· Hot-stamping: Smooth coated art paper and ivory board deliver stable foil transfer. Deeply textured special paper often fails to hold foil neatly, resulting in missing or fuzzy stamping.
· Embossing & debossing: Thick special paper works great for tactile emboss effects. Thin coated paper may crack when pressed heavily.
· Soft-touch lamination: It upgrades luxury feeling, but remember to select PFAS-free lamination film for EU shipments.
· UV printing: Works well on coated paper; uncoated absorbent kraft paper tends to soak UV ink and lose sharpness.
Finishing Guide for Paper Bags:
Paper bags are flexible and under tension during usage, which adds extra limits to decoration.
· Kraft paper bags: Best for water-based ink printing. Heavy hot stamping on soft kraft is easy to peel off after repeated folding.
· Coated paper bags: Support full-color offset printing, UV and hot stamping. But over-lamination will hurt recyclability under PPWR.
· Handles area: Avoid heavy embossing or large-area foil on handle joints, where stress concentration causes cracking.
Key Checklist before Production
1. Confirm paper sample + finishing sample together, not separately.
2. Inform your supplier of target market rules, especially EU PPWR and restricted substances.
3. Test folding resistance after finishing for paper bags.
4. Keep one master sample approved before mass production.
