Paper boxes and premium paper bags are often used as a matching packaging set. They look complementary, yet they follow totally different structural design rules. Misunderstanding their structural features leads to broken packaging and compliance risks.
Paper Box Structure Basics
A rigid box is a rigid assembly built on greyboard frame. The most common styles are two-piece rigid boxes (base & lid), magnetic closure rigid boxes and drawer boxes.
· Stiffness mainly comes from greyboard thickness, not the wrapping face paper.
· Inner fit tolerance matters: Too tight will scratch products; too loose makes items shift inside during shipping.
· Edge wrapping: Sharp corners need well-folded face paper. Thin paper tends to split at box corners.
· Recyclable design: Separate greyboard and paper layers easily. Composite non-separable materials will fail EU recyclability assessment.
Paper Bag Structure Basics
Paper bags are flexible containers, with strength coming from paper grammage, bottom reinforcement and handle connection.
· Bottom: Self-lock bottom is standard for shopping bags. Heavy items need extra paper patch reinforcement at the bottom.
· Handle joint: This is the weakest point. Rope handles with paper patch are far stronger than direct punch holes on thin paper.
· Aspect ratio: Extra tall and slim bags are easy to topple and crease when loaded.
· Recyclable design: Minimize composite glue and plastic parts. Plastic eyelets are discouraged for EU eco requirements.
Matching Set Design Tips When you order rigid boxes plus matching paper bags as a packaging set:
1. Keep consistent surface paper texture and color, but adjust grammage separately for box and bag.
2. Do not copy the same finishing plan directly. What works for rigid boxes may damage paper bags after folding.
3. Calculate the bag load capacity based on the weight of goods inside the rigid box.
4. Simplify composite materials to pass EU recyclability checks.
