Lots of importers focus on paper material and PFAS-free compliance, but overlook recycling marking rules under PPWR. Wrong, missing or mis-printed recycling marks can trigger customs hold or market recall for paper bags and paper boxes .
EU recycling marking is not simply printing a green loop arrow. Each European country has its own local implementation rules.
Typical marking mistakes seen on paper packaging
1. Only print universal recycle arrow, missing material code. Paper-based packaging must show correct material identification code. Rigid boxes combining grey-board & wrapping paper need correct composite material declaration.
2. Wrong mark position. Symbols printed on removable accessories will not be accepted. Marks should stay on main packaging body.
3. Mixed-material mis-coding. Rigid boxes with lamination, paper bags with rope handles are composite packaging; many brands use purepaper code incorrectly.
4. Using old-version symbols. Outdated graphics do not satisfy updated PPWR requirements.
5. Small font size: symbols and text are too tiny to read by end-consumers.
Practical guidance for importers
· Confirm target-country marking requirements first before artwork creation. Rules differ between Germany, France, Italy and other markets.
· For composite packaging (laminated rigid boxes, bags with non-paper handles), apply corresponding composite material codes.
· Keep recycling marks on main box / bag body, avoid putting them on stickers or detachable parts.
· Ask your supplier to review marking artwork before mass production, do not only rely on graphic designers.
