Sustainability and regulatory compliance become top priorities for European importers sourcing paper boxes and paper bags. PPWR regulation sets strict rules on recyclability, material composition and chemical substances for all packaging entering EU market.
Both rigid paper boxes and custom paper gift bags need to meet these requirements. Below are practical design & sourcing tips.
1. Raw-material recyclability
Choose paper sources with recycling certification. For rigid boxes, grey board and wrapping paper should be recyclable. For paper bags, prefer FSC-certified paper stock. Minimize mixed non-paper components.
2. Lamination & chemical restriction
Traditional lamination may hinder paper recycling. Where possible, reduce laminated area. If lamination is required, adopt PFAS-free film. Avoid SVHC restricted substances in ink, glue and hotstamping foil for boxes and bags.
3. Design optimization for recycling
Do not over-combine multi-layer different materials. Keep packaging structure easy to disassemble. Print recycling marks clearly on boxes and bags as required by local EU rules.
4. Balancing luxury look & eco-requirements
Many brands want luxury finish such as soft-touch lamination and hot stamping, meanwhile they need to satisfy sustainability rules. You can still apply softtouch film, just make sure it is PFAS-free grade. Select recyclable hot-stamping foil. We can offer you suitable material combinations.
5. What importers should confirm with suppliers
· Confirm PFAS-free for all laminated surfaces
· Confirm no restricted SVHC substances in ink, glue and foil
· Request material declaration documents when needed
